Who's Your Favorite Sock Puppet?

  • by: Car 31

(Boy howdy – promoted by Colorado Pols)

As we get closer to the primaries and the election, sock puppets are popping up daily on CoPols.

The following definition of sock puppet came from PC Magazine.

A phony name made up by a user in order to masquerade as someone else on the Internet. Sock puppets can make controversial comments or vote for or against a cause without revealing their identity. They may respond to their own Usenet or blog posts praising the articles they wrote themselves or disagree with comments criticizing them on other sites. The term comes from a pretend person made by placing a sock over one’s hand.

Following the tradition of voting for our favorite blogger, it is time to vote for our favorite sock puppet.

Below is an introductory list, which grows by the day, of some sock puppets. I have identified them using two criteria:

1- a new user name

2- comments only on specific races or topics

It seems CD2 has a glut of sock puppets, many battling as I write, but CD6 and CD5 are not far behind.

You may not remember all those listed below, but choose your favorite based on your own criteria…

  1. .

I want to vote for one person who uses 5 sockpuppets:

    …colodem

    …colodemlover

    …cologator

    …elmu

    I forget the 5th one.

But the way you have this set up, I can only vote for one of his multiple identities/ personalities.

    .

      1. Though I’d take issue on The Blonde. She was obviously shilling for some McCain gear, but commented widely on a number of different topics for a while. It’s true, she carried the Michelle Obama Whitey torch through diary after diary, but my impression was she was just vehement, not a true sock puppet.

        1. but maybe in the mind of a troll/shill/sock puppet/person with no better way to serve than to make inane monotonous points that few comprehend nor wish to, well, in those disturbed minds, it may be.

      1. .

We have been challenging each other here for years.

Then you and 4 others show up at the same time,

saying almost the exact same thing,

        on just one topic.

It may be just a big coincidence, I admit.

        But I’m skeptical.

How about you come clean with how that gusher of coordinated commentary came about yesterday,

        and once you do,

        I’ll apologize as appropriate.

        .

        1. if I’m not these other people? I’ll come clean about the fact that I was discussed by the push poll and that prompted me to comment, but that’s all I can and need to come clean about.

I prefer to think of communities as welcoming versus accusatory (And, for the most part, people have been very welcoming).

    1. Strictly speaking, it’s someone who makes up multiple identities so they can agree with themselves or bash those who disagree with them.

A shill would be someone who claims to be a member of the general public but is in fact sponsored by a campaign (or merely posts at the direction of a campaign.)

The poll here covers both categories.

    1. Barron X beats me on crazy? I supported Mike Gravel for crying out loud!

      I’m slightly offended.

[For the record, Barron’s posts are always the most well-thought out, in my opinion.]

  2.    I went with Blondie although it was a tough call.  She (I think it’s a she, but I suppose after S.B. 200, we’ll never know for sure) is probably the most obnoxious on that list.

You’re right…..if Capt. America (who I’m convinced is John Andrews) had been on the list, I might have voted differently.

    1. will be back. I used to see him logged in a lot, not commenting (not even to say some horseshit like “Ed Sealover is a great American” – remember when he was on that kick?). But he’ll be there to remind us of Musty’s great contributions to our American way of life, especially if the CD4 race is as close as everyone thinks it will be.

        1.    That one set the gold standard at ColoradoPols.  I really thought we’d see him (or her?) back since Lamborn is now facing a rerun of ’06.

    1. I tried having meaningful discussions with L4D, but never got anything but the same talking points.

I think more here should try to have fun with the trolls/shills/sockpuppets. Make them back up their statements. That’ll make ’em go away quick.

          1. Jason’s now running for JeffCo Commissioner and is supposedly not posting any more, according to the now more-anonymous “Colorado Pols”.  No idea if the original Jesse and James are still posting or if there have been replacements – they haven’t signed their alter-ego identities to posts in a long time.

        1. and had the odd distinction of serving as the fifth, 10th and 14th governor of the state, with terms spanning 1887 to 1905, although his last appearance lasted less than a day. (See below for the sordid tale.) His younger brother, Billy, was a Colorado governor in the ’20s and his son, also named Alva, was a member of the U.S. Senate briefly in the ’20s and then from 1933 to 1941.

Alva, James and Jesse share a unique distinction in the annals of U.S. governors. Here’s the rundown:

[James] Peabody ran for a second term in 1904, but was vilified by his opponents, who declared “Anybody but Peabody!” and felt that he was in league with the mine owners. Peabody’s opponent, Democrat Alva Adams, ripped into his handling of the Cripple Creek strike and insisted that he could handle Colorado’s vicious “industrial warfare”. After the election, it appeared Adams had won, but Republicans, who still controlled the state legislature, insisted that significant fraud and corruption had conspired to steal the election from Peabody (in reality, both sides had committed major violations of election law). On the day that Adams took office (March 17, 1905), the Republican-controlled legislature voted to remove him from office and reinstall Peabody, on the condition that Peabody immediately resign. He did so, and at day’s end it was Peabody’s lieutenant governor, Jesse McDonald, who occupied the governor’s mansion in Denver — thus making Colorado the only state to have three different governors (Adams, Peabody, McDonald) on the same day.

          Here’s Peabody’s historic resignation letter.

Kinda puts the trials and tribulations of today’s Colorado political scene in perspective. Things could be a lot more rambunctious!

  3. You seem to have a couple of Polis guys/gals in there, but none of the Fitz folks, like GoBlue (if I remember correctly), and Phoenix Rising.

Talk about the hand biting the dog, though. The whole POINT of this site, what makes it so funny, is that it’s ALL shills and sock puppets, or virtually all.

    1. To be honest, I don’t remember who’s who when the shillin’ begins to fly. I glance at the posts, if that. I’ve kept a list of names but don’t care who they represent.

Go Blue is partisan all the way but backs up his facts about a variety of issues.

I always read Phoenix’s posts becasue I agree with him most of the time and he knows what he’s talking about all the time.

In any case, if I do this again I’ll be more considerate of equal representation.

    2. I only post under one ‘nym, so I’m not a sockpuppet, and I’m not a shill, because I don’t post exclusively in favor of any one candidate or issue.

I haven’t even exclusively posted in favor of Joan within the CD-2 race.

    3. Which I believe they most certainly are not, then they have been pulling some deep cover duty for a long ass time. Phoenix was on here since this registration started and Im pretty sure Go Blue has been on here since I started as well, maybe longer.

You, on the other hand, have just a few comments outside of the CD-2 threads. I cant remember which way you swing, presumably polis based on this comment, and frankly I dont care. But accusing Phoenix and Go Blue shows either your reading comprehension is weak, or you take any slight against Polis to be spawned from a sock puppet.

My fav is the blonde, she accused me of being something awhile back. I cant remember what it was, but I remember it being hilarious.

      1. I don’t know how long I’ve been on Colorado Pols; I don’t think the archive site goes back clear to the beginning.  I’ve been on Daily Kos since Jan. 2004, which predates my active involvement in the Democratic Party by a month or two.

There’s still a few of us “old-timers” here, some posting under new ‘nyms, others still posting under their original sign-offs.  We had a bit of a history discussion a while back – can’t find it now.

        1. I posted on the blogspot site a couple of times, using my first name. I didnt get into until my jaunt to law school.

I have been on the somethingawful forums since 04, but the debate and discussion forums arent exactly all politics all the time, like kos.

It is interesting the difference between the debate sites. SA is so much more abrazive and that style doesnt exactly translate here and I get carried away sometimes.

Either way, you have been here too long to be a sock puppet, and your command of knowledge is too impressive. Thanks for posting.

          1. I’ve never ventured to SA for any length of time – I gave up on abusive groups when Internet bulletin board sites became more popular then USENet.  I’ve pretty much retired the asbestos underwear now that I spend my time in more civilized climes.

            1. After that my skin would put a dermatologist’s kid through college. I gave up on D&D when I noticed that I could look at the thread subject title, the person’s avatar and know exactly what argument they would make. The discussions usually have good info, but the acidity with which the info is delivered gets old.

I still read it for the poker forum which is actually really friendly as long as you dont come in with far flung ideas on how to beat the system or think a good month equals dropping everything for a pro career. Although, the subforums probably require interest

One thing I do like, is there probation/ban system, and the fact that it costs money to join. Granted 10 bucks isnt much, but it keeps some of the trolls out, and the ban system cleans up most of the others.

Apples to apples though, I like it here more.

  4. Do I get some kind of award or certificate or something?  Is the contest over?  When do I know if I actually win or not?

Wow.  This is really an honor if I can stay in the lead.
